NLC leaders meet Saraki, Dogara, say strike continues

The President, Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, and his team met for about 40 minutes behind closed-doors on Thursday evening, with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to discuss the nationwide strike over the hike in fuel price. An EgyptAir flight, MS804, with 66 passengers on board went missing in the early hours of Thursday over the Mediterranean en route from Paris to Cairo, Egypt. The Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister, Sherif Fathi, said the crash was likely caused by a terror attack rather than a technical error, USA Today reports. The flight was said to have made two sharp turns before it suddenly lost altitude and vanished from radar. Greek authorities had found floating materials, including life vests, likely to be the wreckage from the plane, adding that the debris was found near the Greek island of Karpathos. French President, François Hollande, confirmed the disappearance of the airliner but said it was too early to determine the cause of the crash. Egypt Air-flight from Paris to Cairo disappears from radar

An EgyptAir plane headed to Cairo from Paris with 69 people on board disappeared from radar at dawn Thursday, the airline said. Flight MS804 operating an Airbus A320 took off from Charles de Gaulle airport at 11:09 p.m. with 59 passengers and 10 crew members, the carrier said in a statement. The aircraft lost communications with radar around 2:45 a.m. Cairo time, it said in a separate statement. Workers in North west shun NLC strike

Public and private sector workers in five states of the North West on Wednesday defied the nationwide strike action ordered by the Ayuba Waba faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over fuel price increase. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that federal and state workers in Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Kebbi have reported to their duty posts in defiance of the order. ABUJA - SENIOR Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU yesterday joined in the nation-wide strike organised by the Ayuba Wabba-led faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC. Though, SSANU was in a capacity building workshop for its members and National Executive Council, NEC, meeting with the theme, "Trade union leadership skills in a challenging environs" at Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies, MINILS, Ilorin, Kwara state, the union said as an affiliate of the NLC it has to abide by the directives of the union. National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke had before joining the strike said that workshop was geared towards equipping members with the required union solidarity and cohesion in the face of challenges. Kebbi gov, Bagudu, loses bid to stop disqualification suit

A Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, ruled that it had jurisdiction to hear and determine a suit, seeking an order, declaring Governor Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State unqualified to contest the April 11, 2015, state governorship election, which he won. Justice Adeniyi Ademola held in a ruling that the court had jurisdiction to entertain some of the plaintiffs' prayers which he said qualified as pre-election matters that fell within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court. The judge was delivering ruling on the separate notices of preliminary objection against the suit filed by the defendants comprising Bagudu, his party, the All Progressives Congress, and the Independent National Electoral Commission. The plaintiffs are Bagudu's main opponent in the April 11, 2015 election, Maj. Gen. Bello Sarkin-Yaki (retd.), and two others – Anthony Itanyi and Sahabi Sami. INEC releases timetables for Edo, Ondo gov polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Thursday, in Abuja, released the timetables and schedule of activities for the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states. According to the electoral body, the Edo State governorship election comes up on Saturday, September 10, 2016 just as that of Ondo State comes up on Saturday, November 26, 2016. INEC said June 12, 2016 had been fixed for the commencement of campaigns by political parties in the Edo governorship election, while party primaries would hold between July 2 and 4, 2016. It said the resolution of disputes would also hold between July 2 and 4, 2016. The electoral body fixed August 11, 2016 for the publication of the voter registers for the election, adding that the submission of the names of party agents for the election would hold on August 27, 2016. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arraigned a Lagos-based lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, for allegedly dealing in a landed property in defiance of a court order. Adegboruwa was arraigned on one count alongside one Jonathan Udeagbala, said to be at large, before Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of a Federal High Court in Lagos. In the charge, marked FHC/L/181c/2016, presented before the court by its prosecutor, Idris Abdullahi, the EFCC claimed that Adegboruwa and Udeagbala dealt in a property "lying, being and situate at House 105, Nicon Estate, Lekki, Lagos," without the authorisation of the EFCC. According to the anti-graft agency, the said property was a subject of litigation before Justice C. A. Balogun of the Lagos State High Court. The Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, on Thursday, described the lingering crisis in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress as the handiwork of enemies of the state and the party. Resident doctors commence five-day strike

Resident Doctors of Nigeria on Thursday in Kano commenced a five-day warning strike in compliance with the directive of the president of the association, Dr Muhammed Askira, at a press conference in Abuja yesterday. According to Askira, the decision was part of the resolutions reached by the association at its extra-ordinary executive council meeting, held on May 8, 2015, claiming that the Federal Government was yet to meet their demands, as promised. Askira listed the demands of the association to include remuneration, as well as Residential training programmes, noting that some members in some states were yet to be paid their salaries. Disclosing that the strike, which commenced at 8am yesterday (Thursday) would end on Sunday, May 15, 2016. All its members are expected to resume duties on Monday, May 16 by 8am. Until the removal, the official price of petrol was N87 per litre although consumers have been paying as much as N200 for fuel due to scarcity. The removal in fuel subsidy has been a lingering issue since President Muhammadu Buhari took over power. The minister of state for petroleum product, Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu had said that the citizens were not benefitting from the subsidy which made it necessary to be removed. An official in the petroleum industry had earlier said the federal government would deregulate the downstream sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry so as to put an end to scarcity. The petroleum minister in a statement said the decision was taken based on the current challenges and that Nigerians have been paying exorbitant prices for fuel. Farmers lament attacks

RICE farmers in Abia State have decried the incessant destruction of their farms by the Fulani herdsmen at Idima Abam and Ndi Oji Abam both in Arochukwu LGA of the state. The farmers said activities of the herdsmen posed a threat to their business in the state. The farmers, who spoke through the state President of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Chief Okechukwu Origa, sought the Abia State Government's assistance to check the herdsmen and enhance their (rice farmers) production capacity. The Nigerian Army on Wednesday brought six military personnel from various units of the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Odogbo, Ibadan, before a General Court Martial over allegation of murder and other offences. A witness, Mr. Abu Sule, told a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that he collected $2.29m cash in Ghana-Must- Go' bag from a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, to help the former governor to buy a property in Asokoro, Abuja. Sule, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's second prosecution witness in Ohakim's ongoing trial, said this while he was being cross-examined by the former governor's lead counsel, Awa Kalu (SAN). The witness said he collected the$2.29m, which was an equivalent of N270m, from Ohakim in $100 bills at night sometimes in November 2008 and handed it over to the then owner of the property, Alhaji Isah Maidabino, the next day.
