Nigerian Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation, saying the sovereignty of the nation is negotiable. On Tuesday, Soyinka said de-centralisation of the nation would ensure healthy rivalry among the component units. The laureate said it was wrong for previous administrations in the country to say that Nigeria's sovereignty was non-negotiable, submitting that the position was antithetical to development. Suspected hoodlums on Wednesday vandalised 14 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicles along the Ikorodu Road in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hoodlums were protesting the death of a street hawker, who was knocked down by an articulated vehicle while trying to evade arrest by Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officials at Maryland Bus Stop. Following the accidental death of the hawker, the hoodlums vented their anger on the mass transit vehicles. A BRT driver, Mr. Adedeji Adeosun, whose vehicle was vandalised, said, "I was in traffic for about 20 minutes at Maryland. "Then I saw some people running from Maryland and I opened the door to see what was happening. "I heard shouts from people that we should come down, so, I immediately removed my uniform. "I saw about 100 hoodlums otherwise called 'area boys' coming with stones and I ran away. "All the passengers on board my bus also came down and ran for dear life.

Ado Ekiti A Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to appear before it on July 4 to explain why it should not unfreeze Governor Ayodele Fayose's account with Zenith Bank. The commission had frozen Fayose's account and those of some of his associates after allegedly tracing N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser to them and those of two sons of a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro. The governor, a strong critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, had gone to a branch of the bank located on Bank/ Secretariat Road for to carry out some transactions when he discovered that his account had been frozen. Yusuf Haliru, justice of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court, Abuja on adjourned for 10 minutes, the alleged case of forgery against Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, owing to the congestion of his courtroom. Haliru, the judge presiding over, met a packed courtroom — to his displeasure — and he then ordered the court registrar to "reorganise" the place. He also ordered non-lawyers to give their seats to lawyers present at the court. But senators who accompanied Saraki and Ekweremadu did not budge; only journalists heeded the order as the registrar zeroed in on them to enforce it. The President-General of the Jama'atu Nasril Islam, who is also the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar lll, on Monday charged the Muslim Ummah (community) to pray for the well-being of President Muhammadu Buhari who jetted out to London, the United Kingdom on Monday to treat an ear- related ailment. Female relatives of some detained suspects have accused the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Rivers State Police Command of infringing on the fundamental human rights of their relatives. The relatives of the suspects specifically said that they (suspects) were stooling and vomiting blood. The relations also demanded that their relatives be taken to court for the sake of justice, instead of being detained without trial. The women who spoke with Southern City News on Friday in Port Harcourt stated that the police had refused every form of treatment for the suspects in the cell. They cried out that the health conditions of the suspects were getting worse, alleging that the police refused them access to any form of treatment.
