EFCC UNDER PRESSURE TO DROP PATIENCE JONATHAN $20m ACCOUNTS PROBE

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been under pressure to drop the probe of Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, for money laundering, according to sources within the agency.

The anti-graft agency as part of investigations into a former Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa, traced four company accounts containing $15.6m to him all domiciled at Skye Bank.

Mrs. Jonathan had, however, deposed an affidavit insisting the monies belonged to her before the EFCC could arraign the suspects.

The move led the anti-graft agency to probe the claim and eventually freeze her personal account, which had $5m in it.

It was gathered that the agency had established a case of money laundering against her and was set to invite her for questioning. But sources within the agency said it had been under pressure to drop the case as there are plans by Patience's supporters to embark on a series of protests this week.

On Friday, scores of supporters of Mrs. Jonathan stormed the Port Harcourt zonal office of the EFCC asking the commission to stop probing her.

They insisted that Patience, who is also from Rivers State, was innocent.

The protesters, who were led by one Sara-Igbe Sukubo, a self-professed anti-corruption ambassador, said they were in the commission to express their unhappiness and submit their letter of protest over what he called ill treatment of Mrs. Jonathan.

In his response, the South-South zonal head of the EFCC, Ishaq Salilu, told the protesters that the EFCC as a creation of law discharges its responsibilities within the ambits of the law.

He said, "The EFCC is a law-abiding organisation which discharges its duties not minding whose ox is gored. We do not shy away from our responsibilities. Where there is a case, we pursue it to its logical conclusion, if there is no case, there is none, we move to other things. The motto of the commission is 'Nobody is above the law.'"

EMIR OF KASTINA TELLS PRESIDENT BUHARI TO SIGN PEACE CORPS BILL

The Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Usman, has declared support for the Peace Corps bill passed by the National Assembly. The bill, which seeks to turn the Peace Corps, a non-government organisation, into a government paramilitary agency, has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. Proponents see it as an avenue to create jobs for thousands of youth while critics describe as a duplication of functions already being performed by existing agencies and creation of another bureaucracy at a time the country is finding it difficult to pay workers' salaries. The bill was opposed by existing military and security institutions in Nigeria and the Peace Corps leader Dickson Akoh is currently being prosecuted for alleged fraud. Apart from lawmakers, the bill is also supported by some prominent Nigerians including the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, who also asked Mr. Buhari to sign to it. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Katsina emir made a similar call on the president on Thursda...
