OGONI CELEBRATE 5 YEARS OF SELF-GOVERNANCE

IT was excitement galore when the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority, OCIA, entrenched in Khana, Gokana Tai and Eleme Local Government areas of Rivers State, celebrated its five years of running an indigenous government.

OCIA, which came into existence on August 2, 2012, in accordance with the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous People, rejected the call for restructuring of Nigeria, stating that it would lead to re-colonisation of smaller ethnic groups in the country.

In his address to mark the day at Bori, the cultural and political capital of the Ogoni nation, in Khana Local Government Area, the President of OCIA, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, noted that Ogoni government has attained a milestone in the last five years.

He said, "We are inspired by shared efforts and our goals to ensure human and material security as well as food security in Ogoniland,".

Diigbo disclosed that OCIA would soon commence the construction of cassava processing plant by month end with raw materials from the 59 cassava farms established by the authority to ensure adequate food supply in the area.

He said: "OCIA has grown and spread throughout 11 provinces, 54 districts and operating 15 institutions, training and empowerment agencies.

Ogoni Central District Assembly, ODCA, the law-making organ for district councils and Ogoni National Legislative Assembly, ONLA, are jointly working to set guidelines for investors to come into the Ogoni economic development initiatives."
