Professor Wole Soyinka Speaks About Nigeria’s Break-Up

Nigerian Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has lent his voice to the growing calls for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation, saying the sovereignty of the nation is negotiable. On Tuesday, Soyinka said de-centralisation of the nation would ensure healthy rivalry among the component units. The laureate said it was wrong for previous administrations in the country to say that Nigeria's sovereignty was non-negotiable, submitting that the position was antithetical to development. Soyinka added, "I am on the side of those who say we must do everything to avoid disintegration. That language I understand. I don't understand (ex President Olusegun) Obasanjo's language. I don't understand (President Muhammadu) Buhari's language and all their predecessors, saying the sovereignty of this nation is non- negotiable. It's bloody well negotiable and we had better negotiate it. We better negotiate it, not even at meetings, not at conferences, but everyday in our ...

A BRT driver, Mr. Adedeji Adeosun, whose vehicle was vandalised, said, "I was in traffic for about 20 minutes at Maryland. "Then I saw some people running from Maryland and I opened the door to see what was happening. "I heard shouts from people that we should come down, so, I immediately removed my uniform. "I saw about 100 hoodlums otherwise called 'area boys' coming with stones and I ran away. "All the passengers on board my bus also came down and ran for dear life. ...

Court summons EFCC, Zenith Bank over Fayose’s frozen account

Ado Ekiti A Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to appear before it on July 4 to explain why it should not unfreeze Governor Ayodele Fayose's account with Zenith Bank. The commission had frozen Fayose's account and those of some of his associates after allegedly tracing N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser to them and those of two sons of a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro. The governor, a strong critic of President Muhammadu Buhari, had gone to a branch of the bank located on Bank/ Secretariat Road for to carry out some transactions when he discovered that his account had been frozen. Judge Orders Saraki’s Accompanying 30 Senators To Vacate Seat Due To Court Congestion

Yusuf Haliru, justice of the federal capital territory (FCT) high court, Abuja on adjourned for 10 minutes, the alleged case of forgery against Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, owing to the congestion of his courtroom. Haliru, the judge presiding over, met a packed courtroom — to his displeasure — and he then ordered the court registrar to "reorganise" the place. He also ordered non-lawyers to give their seats to lawyers present at the court. But senators who accompanied Saraki and Ekweremadu did not budge; only journalists heeded the order as the registrar zeroed in on them to enforce it. Saraki, Ekweremadu, Salisu Maikasuwa, former clerk of the national assembly, and Benedict Efeturi, his deputy, are facing charges of alleged criminal conspiracy and forgery of the senate standing rules, 2015, brought against them by the federal government. Count one of the charge reads: "That you Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, Benedict Efeturi, D...

Death ends the match before full time

If death were a referee, he would have been extremely authoritarian. Apart from the fact that a referee's decision is normally the final, umpire death would have been notorious on the pitch. Among other terrible scenarios, he could end a match mid-way, even when nothing practically called for that. This appears to be what death did on Wednesday when it took away a former Nigerian international, captain and coach, Stephen Keshi. The suddenness of his death has rattled millions of football lovers within and outside the country. Perhaps because it has been relatively long when a sports personality of his calibre suddenly departed as he did, the development has set emotions burning. Last year, the country lost the likes of coach Willy Bazuaye and goalkeeper Wilfred Agbonavbare. They were duly mourned but the shock was not as widespread as we have now. Emotions close to what is currently being experienced manifested after the death of RashidiYekini, Muda Lawal and Sam Okwaraji, with the...
