A lawyer has dragged his secretary to court for alleged theft. The secretary, Gbenga Akindele, who allegedly bolted with his employer's N118, 000, was charged before an Ikeja Magistrate Court yesterday.The 21-year-old, who lives at Agege in Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.According to the prosecutor, Inspector Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offence on December 17 at Tabon-Tabon in Agege.He said Akindele, who was working as the secretary in the chambers of Mr Rotimi Akomolafe, was asked to pay some money into his employer's account at First Bank but converted the money to personal use."Gbenga was sent to make payment of N79, 000 and N39, 000 into two different accounts at FirstBank belonging to Akomolafe and Oluwakemi Adeniyi. He, however, converted the money to personal use," Ayorinde said.The accused pleaded not guilty.Ruling on the bail application of the accused, theMagistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum
The Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Usman, has declared support for the Peace Corps bill passed by the National Assembly. The bill, which seeks to turn the Peace Corps, a non-government organisation, into a government paramilitary agency, has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians. Proponents see it as an avenue to create jobs for thousands of youth while critics describe as a duplication of functions already being performed by existing agencies and creation of another bureaucracy at a time the country is finding it difficult to pay workers' salaries. The bill was opposed by existing military and security institutions in Nigeria and the Peace Corps leader Dickson Akoh is currently being prosecuted for alleged fraud. Apart from lawmakers, the bill is also supported by some prominent Nigerians including the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, who also asked Mr. Buhari to sign to it.
